§ 129: The good

What is the good? It is the unity of two things. On one side, what the will wants by its very nature. On the other side, the single will of a person.

What does it contain?

It contains right. It contains welfare. It also contains the knowledge of the individual and the circumstances of the world. None of these stands on its own anymore. But none of them disappears. The good sublates all of it and preserves it.

An image:

Let us think of an orchestra. Every instrument has its part. Alone, each part sounds thin. Playing together, they make music. No part disappears. But each one gains its meaning only in the whole.

How great is the good?

The good is freedom realized. It is the final purpose of the world. Everything else aims at it.

Summary: The good unites the universal will with the will of the individual. It sublates and preserves right and welfare. It is freedom realized, the final purpose of the world.

Each stage is properly speaking the Idea, but the earlier ones contain it only in a more abstract form. Thus, for example, I, as personality, am already the Idea, but in its most abstract shape. The good is therefore the more determinate Idea, the unity of the concept of the will and the particular will. It is not something abstractly juridical, but something full of content, whose substance consists of both right and well-being.
