§ 130: No good without right, no right without welfare

In the good, right and welfare belong together. Neither may push the other aside.

Welfare without right:

Here my welfare no longer counts as my private advantage. It counts only as a welfare that goes together with the freedom of all. A welfare that demands a wrong is not good.

Right without welfare:

In the same way, right alone is not good. An old saying goes: There shall be justice, even if the world perishes. But a right that lets the world perish is not the good.

Who has the last word?

The good. It stands above the mere right of property. It also stands above the particular purposes of welfare. Both hold only insofar as they accord with the good.

Summary: Welfare without right is not good, and right without welfare is not good. The good stands above both. They hold only insofar as they serve it.
