§ 173: The children

In the children, the love of the parents becomes visible.

What does this mean?

The unity of man and woman is at first only a feeling. It lives in two separate people. But in the child this unity stands before them in the flesh. In the child the mother also loves the father. The father loves the mother in it. Both have their love before their eyes in the child.

And the passing of time?

The parents were once children themselves. Now they have children. These will be parents in their turn. So it goes on from generation to generation.

Summary: In the child, the love of the parents becomes a reality of its own. The parents see their unity in the flesh before them. So life goes on from generation to generation.

Between man and wife the relation of love is not yet objective; for even though feeling is indeed the substantial unity, this [unity] still has no objectivity. Such objectivity the parents attain only in their children, in whom they have before them the whole of [their] union. The mother loves the husband in the child, the husband loves the wife in it, both have their love before them in it. Whereas in property the unity exists only in an external thing, in the children it exists in something spiritual, in which the parents are loved and which they [in turn] love.
