§ 253: The honor of an estate

In the corporation, the family has firm ground. Its living is secure as long as it is capable.

And more than that: Others recognize this. The member does not always have to show that he can do something and that he is doing well. People know that he is something. And they know that he belongs to a whole. He works for the common purpose. So he has his honor in his estate.

Whoever belongs to no corporation:

He has no honor of an estate. He stands alone. Only the selfish side of his trade remains for him. His living is uncertain.

What does he do then?

He seeks recognition through outer signs of his success. A bigger house, a more expensive coach, more splendid parties. These signs know no limit. For there is no estate whose measure he could follow.

Luxury and rabble:

People complain about luxury and waste in the trades. They also see how the rabble arises. There are many causes for this, such as work that grows ever more mechanical. But we must not overlook the ethical reason: the lack of the corporation.

Help without humiliation:

In the corporation, help for the poor no longer depends on chance. And it no longer humiliates. The rich man has duties toward his fellows. So wealth loses the arrogance in its owner and the envy in the others. And whoever is upright finds true recognition.

Summary: The corporation secures the living and gives its members the honor of their estate. Whoever stands alone seeks recognition in outer show. In the corporation, help does not humiliate.
