Hegel\u2019s “Groundlines of the Philosophy of Right<\/em>“<\/strong> from October 1820 is one of the most profound and influential philosophical works in human history\u2014addressing freedom, the will, right, ethics, economics, politics, world history, and much more<\/a>. Its\u2014admittedly difficult\u2014reading remains rewarding even 205 years later.<\/p>\n

live.grundlinien.de<\/em><\/strong> is the project of an “infinite<\/a>” reading group<\/strong>, with the goal of reading through Hegel\u2019s “Philosophy of Right” together<\/mark> every Sunday<\/strong>\u2014”Philosophy is the Sunday of life” (Hegel). We want to better understand and clarify this dense, heavy, and thought-rich text\u2014and Hegel\u2019s philosophy in general\u2014together.<\/p>\n

Every Sunday, from 4 to 5 PM<\/a><\/strong><\/mark> CET\/CEST<\/a><\/strong> (Central European (Summer) Time) we meet for one hour online via Zoom<\/mark>. Preparation or follow-up<\/em><\/a> is not expected, though it is certainly possible (depending on one’s own goals).<\/p>\n

The address for the Zoom meeting is http:\/\/live.grundlinien.de<\/strong><\/a>. Anyone with an interest in the matter is welcome\u2014from complete beginners to experts. The idea is that everyone can learn from everyone\u2014“Peer-to-Peer Learning”<\/mark>. Joining<\/a> with benefit is, in principle, possible at any time. Leaving is, of course, as well.<\/p>\n

We want to read the text together in a close<\/mark>, in-depth<\/mark>, and unbiased<\/mark>\u00a0manner<\/a>\u2014meaning slowly and by clarifying as many of Hegel\u2019s presuppositions as possible. Unfortunately, there is no spirit without the letter, no truth without the labor of the notion<\/mark> (Anstrengung des Begriffs<\/em>). The goal is an understanding that transcends the purely academic\u2014perhaps facilitating a genuine encounter with the Hegelian spirit that (following Spivak<\/a>) “haunts” our thinking. Questions, comments, and critiques<\/mark> are, of course, always welcome.<\/p>\n

The working language is English, but occasionally German where appropriate. Knowledge of (some) German would be helpful. But we muddle through.<\/p>\n

The Chatham House Rule<\/a> applies unless otherwise agreed in individual cases.<\/p>\n

There is a profound value in being part of a reading circle <\/mark>about the groundlines1<\/a><\/sup> of our coexistence\u2014with Hegel\u2019s text serving as the inertial mass of our conceptual flywheel.<\/p>\n
