For the Groundlines of the Philosophy of Right<\/em> there is no critical edition on the market that one could simply buy and that would contain everything. One has to choose, and the choice has consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

German<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suhrkamp, Werke in zwanzig B\u00e4nden (TWA), volume 7.<\/strong> The usual reading text, citable everywhere, inexpensive, with the Additions by Gans. Drawback: the textual layers stand one beneath the other without warning, and the edition goes back to the Friends\u2019 Edition of 1832\u201345, not to the first printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meiner, Philosophische Bibliothek<\/strong> (after the edition by Johannes Hoffmeister, today revised by Bernhard Ladwig and Klaus Grotsch). More careful textually, with Hegel\u2019s own marginal notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gesammelte Werke<\/strong> (Meiner, on behalf of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy). The authoritative historical-critical edition. Volume 14 contains the Groundlines<\/em>, volumes 26,1 to 26,3 the lecture transcripts. Anyone working scholarly cites from this. Expensive and not designed for convenience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This edition.<\/strong> It sets the layers side by side and keeps them apart \u2014 main text, Remark, Hegel\u2019s notes, several transcripts, the Addition by Gans \u2014 and links every paragraph with the others. It does not replace the printed edition; it shows what the printed editions slide into one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

English<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the philosophy of right, H. B. Nisbet<\/strong> (Cambridge, ed. Allen W. Wood, 1991) is the present-day reference; the older translation by T. M. Knox<\/strong> (Oxford 1942) is still usable and is frequently cited in the secondary literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Phenomenology<\/em> the situation is harder. A. V. Miller<\/strong> (1977) is widely used, but renders Aufheben<\/em> variously as \u201esupersede\u201c, \u201eannul\u201c, \u201eovercome\u201c \u2014 which deprives the reader of precisely the double meaning that matters. Terry Pinkard<\/strong> (Cambridge 2018) and Michael Inwood<\/strong> (Oxford 2018) consistently use \u201esublate\u201c; Inwood has some 170 pages of commentary and is the better choice for beginners. Baillie<\/strong> (1910) is to be avoided, because there Geist<\/em> is now \u201emind\u201c, now \u201espirit\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A note on this edition: the paragraphs here are translated afresh rather than taken over from Knox or Nisbet. Where a term is contested, the choice is stated in the glossary<\/a> \u2014 Sittlichkeit<\/em> as \u201eethical life\u201c, Aufhebung<\/em> as \u201esublation\u201c, Verwirklichung<\/em> as \u201eactualization\u201c.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A practical point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The paragraph numbering of the Groundlines<\/em> is the same in all editions \u2014 that is why Hegel is cited by paragraph and not by page. For the Phenomenology<\/em> this does not hold; there the paragraph numbering of the translations diverges. Anyone working in a reading group should agree on one edition beforehand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
