For the <em>Groundlines of the Philosophy of Right<\/em> there is no continuous video course at all \u2014 only a quarter of an hour of overview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">English<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL4gvlOxpKKIgR4OyOt31isknkVH2Kweq2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gregory B. Sadler, \u201eHalf Hour Hegel\u201c<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 the gold standard: some 376 half-hour videos going through the <em>Phenomenology of Spirit<\/em> paragraph by paragraph, down to the closing section. Nine years of work. Anyone who wants to know how slowly Hegel has to be read can see it here.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLBAqLRlJe9p4sSXYnSVZUyVFeRFDFB4RR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stephen Houlgate, \u201eHegel\u2019s Science of Logic\u201c<\/a><\/strong> (Hegel Society of Great Britain) \u2013 eighteen lectures on the <em>Science of Logic<\/em>, the best freely available course on it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLZDJ2sJwRHVPamkOKvadG8hKK6jGhZw5S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kevin Thompson, \u201eHegel\u2019s Science of Logic Lecture Course\u201c (DePaul University, September 2024 \u2013 March 2025)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 40 videos going through the <em>Science of Logic<\/em> in full, from the historical orientation to the end. A real university course, not an explainer format: session by session at the text, systematically strict. Especially rewarding for readers of this edition, because Thompson is at the same time the author of the most important recent work on the method of the <em>Groundlines<\/em> (see below) \u2014 the logic course is the groundwork for it. The recording is on the channel of a course participant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@kenfoldes6125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ken Foldes, \u201eIntroduction to Hegel\u2019s Phenomenology of Spirit\u201c<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 nine lectures in 36 videos; the compact alternative to Sadler.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLmbzLDB0GOlMzeunPniV37wrBYrh6bA-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Brandom, Hegel lectures (LMU Munich 2011)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 a demanding systematic reading; not for the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">German<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@vernunftrausch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201e15 Minuten Hegel\u201c (Sebastian Ostritsch, University of Stuttgart)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 ten episodes of about a quarter of an hour each, sound in substance and still listenable. The best first approach in German. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PF4CNPa75PE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Episode 8 deals with the philosophy of right<\/a>; episode 7 with the Logic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SXidEQGvvsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sternstunde Philosophie: conversation with Dina Emundts (SRF, 2020)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 barely an hour in conversation with a distinguished Hegel scholar. For a first overview the most sensible thing available in television format.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.izkt.uni-stuttgart.de\/videos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lecture series \u201eDas Wahre ist das Ganze\u201c (University of Stuttgart, 2021)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 around ten lectures of an hour and a half, ordered by parts of the system, among them \u201eHegel und die praktische Philosophie\u201c. Specialist level, for advanced readers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2V1B9hrq5ZE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gert Scobel, \u201eHegel \u2013 wer ist der Jahrhundert-Philosoph?\u201c (3sat)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 popular, but not shallow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cast.itunes.uni-muenchen.de\/vod\/playlists\/ZQy9e7ojFF.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julia Peters, \u201eHegels Philosophie des Geistes\u201c (LMU Munich)<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 a genuine university lecture course, freely accessible, not on YouTube.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the <em>Groundlines<\/em> there is no continuous video course. The closest are Ostritsch\u2019s fifteen minutes (see above); indirectly Thompson\u2019s logic course \u2014 whoever reads his book on the method of the philosophy of right has the lecture course to go with it there \u2014 and, as an audio recording only, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/LectureCourseInHegelsPhilosophyOfRight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a complete lecture course by Richard Dien Winfield<\/a> in twenty sessions, in English. That is where matters stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone looking for a controversial present-day reading will find it in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uj-5N_7po70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five-part interview with Todd McGowan on <em>Emancipation After Hegel<\/em><\/a> \u2013 Hegel as a thinker of irreducible contradiction rather than of reconciliation. That is not an introduction but a thesis, and it should be read as one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">One reservation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Videos explain what someone has understood. They do not replace the carrying out \u2014 see <a href=\"https:\/\/grundlinien.de\/en\/why-read-hegel-laboriously-when-ai-can-explain-it\/\">Why read Hegel laboriously when AI can explain it?<\/a> They are most useful alongside the text, not instead of it: watch an episode, then read the paragraph, then check whether the two fit together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"grl-fundstellen wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Literature.<\/strong> Kevin Thompson, <em>Hegel\u2019s Theory of Normativity. The Systematic Foundations of the Philosophical Science of Right<\/em>, Evanston 2019 \u2013 the book version of what is prepared methodologically in his logic course. \u2013 <strong>Note.<\/strong> The details were checked in September 2026; channels and playlists may change.
