In order to read<\/em> it: no. In order to understand why it is built as it is built: yes \u2014 but that can be caught up on, and this edition tries to make it easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the Logic comes through<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The order of the Groundlines<\/em> is not an arrangement by topic but a derivation. Abstract right, morality<\/a>, ethical life<\/a> correspond to the course from being<\/a> through essence<\/a> to concept<\/a> in the Logic. Whoever does not know this takes Hegel\u2019s transitions for assertions \u2014 \u201eand now comes the next chapter\u201c \u2014 instead of for steps that want to be grounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At particular points it becomes unavoidable. \u00a7 279<\/a>, the derivation of the monarch, is conducted purely logically; Hegel says so himself and refers to the ontological proof of God. Whoever reads it there without the Logic sees only an embarrassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you can do instead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beneath every paragraph of this edition there is a section \u201eThe logical development\u201c<\/strong>. It says where in the course you are and why the step falls due at this point. That does not replace the Science of Logic<\/em>, but it makes visible that the order is not arbitrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to tackle the Logic itself: Hegel wrote it twice. The greater Science of Logic<\/em> (1812\u201316) is unsuitable as a way in \u2014 there are experienced teachers who advise against teaching it at all. The \u201elesser Logic\u201c, the first part of the Encyclopaedia<\/em>, is shorter and has oral Additions, but easy it is not either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The honest answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One can read the philosophy of right with profit without knowing the Logic \u2014 generations of lawyers have done so. One then reads it as an extraordinarily acute theory of property, contract, punishment, the market, poverty and the state. What one does not see is the reason why the parts stand in this order. Whether one misses that is usually noticed only later \u2014 and then is the moment to begin the Logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
