In brief:<\/strong> Because the empiricist demand \u2013 begin with experience \u2013 is not disputed by Hegel but taken over. And because the \u201eproof\u201c he offers is of another kind than an experiment: it consists in the necessity of the transition from one concept to the next, and one tests it by following it through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An empiricist is already philosophising \u2013 only unnoticed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whoever collects \u201efacts\u201c or \u201edata\u201c uses determinations in doing so that are not themselves data. The sentence \u201eThis stone is hard<\/em> and fell<\/em> to the ground because gravity<\/em> acts as its cause<\/em>\u201c contains four of them. Cause<\/em>, force<\/em>, thing<\/em>, property<\/em> can be neither seen nor measured; they are thought, so that the sense data can be ordered at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Logic<\/a> is the science of precisely these determinations \u2013 the operating system running in the background while the data are processed. To occupy oneself with it means to make it conscious and to test it for consistency instead of applying it blindly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Hegel of all people, then?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because consistent empiricism leads the empiricist into scepticism. Hume has to concede that in his sense data he finds neither a cause nor a law nor an I, but only a succession of impressions \u2013 and that it cannot be proved that the sun will rise tomorrow. Experience dissolves in his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hegel, by contrast, does not deny that experience stands at the beginning. He says so expressly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emergence of philosophy out of the need mentioned has experience<\/em>, the immediate and reasoning consciousness, for its starting point.<\/p>\nEncyclopaedia (1830), \u00a7 12<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And for the philosophy of nature it is put more sharply still: \u201ethe emergence and formation of philosophical science has empirical physics for its presupposition and condition\u201c (\u00a7 246 note). What Hegel denies is not experience but the claim that it already supplies cognition: the stimulus comes from the empirical sciences, but thinking has the task of raising their content \u201eto necessity\u201c. Not a flight from the world, then, but the most comprehensive attempt to comprehend<\/a> the whole of experience \u2013 from gravitation to the French Revolution \u2013 as a connected process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And why the philosophy of right?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because among Hegel\u2019s books it is the most empirical: the philosophy of everyday social experience. What property<\/a> is one experiences with every purchase; what a contract<\/a> is, with every signature; what wrong and punishment<\/a> are, in every news broadcast; the tension between conscience<\/a> and law everyone knows; and the difference between family<\/a> and market \u2013 civil society<\/a> \u2013 is a daily experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The empiricist observes all this as separate facts. The Groundlines<\/em> claim that these facts are connected and can be developed out of one another. Whether that is so can be tested on the text \u2013 and that is exactly what the proof consists in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What \u201eproof\u201c means here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An empiricist looks for a proof as an experiment or a single datum: \u201eShow me a fact that proves ethical life<\/a>.\u201c That is a category mistake \u2013 a conceptual necessity cannot be established by a single fact, any more than a mathematical theorem by measuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proof of philosophy lies in immanent coherence<\/em> and in the necessity of the development<\/em>. Concretely, in the Groundlines<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. That there is property is not proved \u2013 that is experience (\u00a7 41<\/a> ff.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. What is proved is that the concept of property, thought consistently through, necessarily contains the possibility of wrong<\/a> (\u00a7 82<\/a> ff.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. And that wrong brings forth the concept of punishment as the restoration of right (\u00a7 97<\/a>\u2013\u00a7 101<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. And that the sphere of merely external right is inadequate and passes over into an inner one \u2013 morality<\/a> (\u00a7 104<\/a> f.).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The proof is therefore the process of reading itself. Whoever goes through the Groundlines<\/em> from \u00a7 1<\/a> to \u00a7 360<\/a> and has to concede at each point that the next stage solves a problem of the preceding one and that the sequence holds has carried out the proof. Whoever says at some point \u201ehere it does not follow\u201c has an objection \u2013 and the only kind that counts. Both are results; neither can be had before reading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is demanded in this Hegel himself calls the \u201eexertion of the concept\u201c:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
