That it is not, and does not want to be. It lays claim not to the data but to the concepts with which the particular sciences work without examining them.

What the system is not

Hegel never claimed to be a better physicist than Newton or a better lawyer than Savigny. Philosophy does not compete for empirical data. For the philosophy of nature he says so expressly:

Not only must philosophy be in agreement with the experience of nature; the emergence and formation of philosophical science has empirical physics for its presupposition and condition.

Encyclopaedia (1830), § 246 note

And in the same introduction he draws the limit himself: it is „utterly improper to demand of the concept that it should comprehend such contingencies and, as it has been called, construct or deduce them“ (§ 250 note). The philosopher who wants to prescribe measurements to the quantum physicist has Hegel against him, not for him. How far this holds in detail is treated in Is Hegel’s philosophy of nature the Achilles heel of the system?

What it claims instead

Not the data but the basic determinations. The physicist works with „force“, „law“, „matter“, but as a physicist does not ask what a law is. The lawyer works with person, contract, guilt. The economist with need, value, exchange. These determinations are the object of the Logic, and the question how they hang together is the question of the system.

That is a limited claim – but not a modest one. It asserts that the order in which these determinations appear is not arbitrary.

Why the fragmentation of knowledge does not settle the question

The objection that philosophy is no longer done this way describes a state of affairs correctly and draws from it a conclusion that does not follow. The particular sciences are so specialised that the neurobiologist, the economist and the constitutional lawyer work in separate conceptual worlds. The result is more knowledge and less connection.

Hegel has a concept for this state, and it is not harmless: alienation. A world that is completely described and not comprehended appears alien and contingent; one is not at home in it. Whether philosophy can heal that is open. That the question arises is not a presumption of the nineteenth century.

And why the philosophy of right in particular

Because it is the hinge. It takes the sober findings of civil society – division of labour, market, class formation, poverty – and asks how the individual can be free within this necessity. It is thus the one place in the system where the claim can be tested on an object every reader knows from his own experience.

The sentence from § 257 – „the state is the actuality of the ethical Idea“ – is meant in exactly this sense and not as glorification: what occurs in experience as an institution is to be comprehended as a necessary shape of freedom. Whether that succeeds is decided at § 182–§ 256, not by a declaration of intent.

What remains of the objection

A good deal. The claim that the order of the determinations is necessary is in many places weaker than asserted; the transitions are, even in the judgement of well-disposed readers, not always compelling. And the philosophy of nature shows that a system that wants to comprehend the empirical science of its time can grow old along with it.

What does not remain is the notion that Hegel wanted to meddle in the particular sciences’ trade. That kind of philosophy is dead – but it was never his.

Sources. Encyclopaedia (1830) §§ 1–18 (the relation of philosophy and the particular sciences), § 12, § 246 note, § 250 note. – Groundlines § 2 (legal science as part of the system), § 182–§ 256, § 257. – In the glossary: The Concept, Alienation, Actuality and Rationality.

In brief: It would be presumptuous if it were what it is taken for – a super-science prescribing their results to the particular sciences.
