Division of the Work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the sequence of stages in the development of the Idea of the will that is free in and for itself, the will is<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A. immediate<\/em>; its concept therefore abstract \u2013 personality<\/em> \u2013 and its determinate being an immediate external thing; \u2013 the sphere of abstract<\/em> or formal right<\/em>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B. the will reflected out of its external determinate being into itself<\/em>, determined as subjective individuality<\/em> over against the universal<\/em> \u2013 the latter being in part something inward, the good<\/em>, and in part something outward, a world at hand<\/em> \u2013 and these two sides of the Idea only mediated through one another<\/em>; the Idea in its diremption, or in its particular<\/em> existence \u2013 the right of the subjective will<\/em> in relation to the right of the world and to the right<\/em> of the Idea, which, however, is only an Idea in itself<\/em>; \u2013 the sphere of morality<\/em>;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C. the unity<\/em> and truth<\/em> of these two abstract moments \u2013 the thought-Idea of the good realized in the will reflected into itself<\/em> and in an external world<\/em>\u00b9 \u2013 so that freedom exists as substance<\/em> just as much as actuality<\/em> and necessity<\/em> as it does as subjective<\/em> will; \u2013 the Idea<\/em> in its existence that is universal in and for itself; ethical life<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ethical substance, however, is likewise<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a) natural<\/em> spirit; \u2013 the family<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

b) in its diremption<\/em> and appearance<\/em>; \u2013 civil society<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

c) the state<\/em>, as that objective freedom which is equally universal in the free self-subsistence of the particular will; \u2013 whose actual and organic spirit \u03b1) as that of a people becomes and reveals itself as actual \u03b2) through the relation of the particular national spirits to one another \u03b3) in world history as the universal world spirit, whose right<\/em> is the highest<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That a thing or a content which is posited only according to its concept<\/em>, or as it is in itself<\/em>, has the shape of immediacy<\/em> or of being<\/em>, is presupposed from speculative logic; the concept which is for itself<\/em> in the form of the concept<\/em> is something else again; this is no longer something immediate. \u2013 Likewise the principle determining this division is presupposed. The division may also be regarded as a historical<\/em> anticipation of the parts, for the various stages must issue from the nature of the content itself as moments in the development of the Idea. A philosophical division is in general not an external classification of a given material, carried out according to one or more grounds of division adopted from outside, but the immanent distinguishing of the concept itself. \u2013 Morality<\/em> and ethical life<\/em>, usually taken to be roughly synonymous, are here taken in essentially different senses. Meanwhile, ordinary usage too seems to distinguish them; Kantian usage prefers the expression morality<\/em>, since indeed the practical principles of that philosophy confine themselves entirely to this concept, even rendering the standpoint of ethical life<\/em> impossible \u2013 indeed expressly negating and repudiating it. But even if morality and ethical life were synonymous according to their etymology, this would not prevent these two now-distinct words from being used for distinct concepts.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
