The State<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The state is the actuality of the ethical Idea \u2014 ethical spirit as the <em>revealed<\/em>, self-transparent, substantial will, which thinks and knows itself and accomplishes what it knows, and insofar as it knows it. It has its immediate existence in <em>custom<\/em>, and its mediated existence in the <em>self-consciousness<\/em> of the individual, in the latter&#8217;s knowledge and activity; while self-consciousness, in turn, has its <em>substantial freedom<\/em> in the disposition it holds toward the state as its essence, purpose, and the product of its activity.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The <em>Penates<\/em> are the inner, <em>lower<\/em> gods; the <em>spirit of a people<\/em> (Athena) is the divine that <em>knows<\/em> and <em>wills<\/em> itself; <em>piety<\/em> is feeling, and the ethical life that comports itself within feeling; <em>political virtue<\/em> is the willing of the thought-out purpose that is in and for itself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Third Section.
