{"id":900469,"date":"2024-05-30T07:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T05:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grundlinien.de\/?p=900300"},"modified":"2026-08-24T10:30:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T08:30:26","slug":"303","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grundlinien.de\/en\/303\/","title":{"rendered":"303"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em>universal<\/em> estate \u2014 more specifically, the estate devoted to the <em>service of government<\/em> \u2014 has, immediately in its determination, the universal as the end of its essential activity; in the <em>estates<\/em> element of legislative power, the <em>private estate<\/em> attains a <em>political significance<\/em> and effectiveness. It can, in this connection, appear neither as a mere undifferentiated mass nor as a multitude dissolved into its atoms, but as <em>what it already is<\/em> \u2014 namely, differentiated into the estate grounded on the substantial relationship and the estate grounded on particular needs and the labour that mediates them (<a href=\"https:\/\/grundlinien.de\/en\/201\/\">\u00a7 201<\/a> ff.). Only in this way does the <em>particular<\/em> that is actual in the state truly connect, in this respect, with the universal.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This runs counter to another current representation, according to which, when the private estate is raised to participation in the universal concern within legislative power, it must appear there in the form of <em>individuals<\/em> \u2014 whether these choose representatives for this function, or whether indeed each individual is to exercise a vote in it himself. This atomistic, abstract view already disappears in the family, as in civil society, where the individual comes to appearance only as a member of a universal. The state, however, is essentially an organization of such members as are <em>in themselves circles<\/em>, and in it no moment ought to show itself as an inorganic multitude. <em>The many<\/em> as individuals \u2014 what is commonly understood by the people \u2014 are indeed a <em>togetherness<\/em>, but only as the <em>multitude<\/em> \u2014 a formless mass whose movement and activity would, for that very reason, be merely elemental, irrational, wild, and terrible. Just as one still hears talk, with reference to the constitution, of the <em>people<\/em> as this inorganic aggregate, so one can already know in advance that only generalities and crooked declamations are to be expected. \u2014 The representation which, once the communities already present within those circles enter into the political \u2014 that is, into the standpoint of the <em>highest concrete universality<\/em> \u2014 again dissolves them into a multitude of individuals, thereby holds civil life and political life apart from one another and sets the latter, so to speak, in the air, since its basis would then be only the abstract individuality of arbitrary will and opinion, hence the contingent, and not a <em>firm<\/em> and <em>rightful<\/em> foundation in and for itself. \u2014 Although in the representations of so-called theories the <em>estates<\/em> of <em>civil<\/em> society in general and the <em>estates<\/em> in their <em>political<\/em> significance lie far apart, language has nevertheless preserved this union, which existed already before.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The universal estate \u2014 more specifically, the estate devoted to the service of government \u2014 has, immediately in its determination, the universal as the end of its essential activity; in the estates element of legislative power, the private estate attains a political significance and effectiveness.
