{"id":901033,"date":"2024-05-30T01:50:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-29T23:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grundlinien.de\/?p=901033"},"modified":"2026-08-24T10:30:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T08:30:31","slug":"337","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grundlinien.de\/en\/337\/","title":{"rendered":"337"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The substantial welfare of the state is its welfare as a <em>particular<\/em> state in its determinate interest and condition, together with its equally distinctive external circumstances and its particular treaty relations: government is thus a <em>particular wisdom<\/em>, not universal providence (cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/grundlinien.de\/en\/324\/\">\u00a7 324<\/a> Remark) \u2014 just as, in its relation to other states, the purpose and the principle governing the justice of wars and treaties is not some universal (philanthropic) thought, but the actually injured or threatened welfare <em>in its determinate particularity<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>At one time, the opposition between morality and politics, and the demand that the latter should conform to the former, was much discussed. In this connection, it need only be remarked in general that the welfare of a state has a quite different warrant from the welfare of the individual, and that the ethical substance, the state, has its determinate being, that is, its right, immediately in a concrete existence rather than an abstract one, and that only this concrete existence \u2014 and not one of the many universal thoughts held to be moral commandments \u2014 can be the principle of its action and conduct.
