This comprehension is its being and its principle, and the <em>completion<\/em> of an act of comprehension is at the same time its self-externalization and its transition. The spirit that, to put it formally, comprehends this comprehension <em>anew<\/em> \u2014 which is to say, the spirit that returns into itself out of its self-externalization \u2014 is spirit at a higher stage in relation to itself, compared with how it stood in that earlier act of comprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The question of the <em>perfectibility<\/em> and <em>education of the human race<\/em> belongs here. Those who have asserted this perfectibility have had an intimation of something of the nature of spirit \u2014 of its nature to have <em>\u0393\u03bd\u1ff6\u03b8\u03b9 \u03c3\u03b5\u03b1\u03c5\u03c4\u03cc\u03bd<\/em> as the law of its <em>being<\/em>, and, in that it comprehends what <em>it is<\/em>, to be a higher shape than that which merely constituted its being. But for those who reject this thought, spirit has remained an empty word, just as history has remained a superficial play of <em>contingent<\/em>, so-called <em>merely human<\/em> endeavours and passions.
