Durch dies Besondere hat die Handlung subjektiven Wert, Interesse für mich. Gegen diesen Zweck, die Absicht dem Inhalte nach, ist das Unmittelbare der Handlung in ihrem weiteren Inhalte zum Mittel herabgesetzt. Insofern solcher Zweck ein Endliches ist, kann er wieder zum Mittel für eine weitere Absicht usf. ins Unendliche herabgesetzt werden.
It is on the strength of this particular aspect that the action has
subjective worth or interest for me. In contrast with this end – the
content of the intention – the direct character of the action in its
further content is reduced to a means. In so far as such an end is
something finite, it may in its turn be reduced to a means to some
further intention and so on ad infinitum.
