Wilhelm.
He was baptized on 27 August 1770 in Stuttgart with three given names: Georg Wilhelm Friedrich. The one actually in use was the middle one. His wife Marie and his sister Christiane call him Wilhelm in the surviving letters, and within the family he signed himself so.
Two side remarks, because both regularly go wrong:
– The order is Georg Wilhelm Friedrich, not „Georg Friedrich Wilhelm“. The confusion is common enough to have found its way into library catalogues.
– He never bore a title of nobility. Where „von Hegel“ appears, either a descendant is meant – his son Karl was ennobled as a historian – or it is simply wrong.
He is normally cited as G. W. F. Hegel. In this edition, references give only the title of the work, since it is clear enough who is meant.
