We read (almost) every Sunday together through the “Elements of the Philosophy of Right.” Everyone may take a turn reading, but no one has to. Questions and comments are always welcome; every perspective on the text is helpful. However, the effort to understand the text should take priority, so that one is not merely looking for confirmation of one’s prior assumptions.

Wherever possible, the systematic presuppositions that Hegel makes in the text should be made explicit and explained.

The aim is to cover three “tenors” per session. Hegel’s text is typically divided into the “tenor” – in short form, what the passage is about – the “remark,” in which Hegel explains the tenor, and then, where applicable, the “additions” compiled by Eduard Gans, as well as, in part, the handwritten “notes” (from Hegel’s own lecture copy of the text).

In the meeting, we therefore read only the tenor as “required material.”

For the text basis and – for anyone interested – secondary literature: here.

We start and end relatively punctually.
