Since this unity of the concept of the will and its existence, which is the particular will, is knowing, the consciousness of the distinction of these moments of the Idea is present, but in such a way that now each is, for itself, the totality of the Idea and has it for its ground and content.
§ 143: Two sides, each of which is the whole
In ethical life, two sides hang together. One is the universal: the order that holds for all. The other is the single person with his will.
Because the person knows about this, he can tell the two sides apart. He sees the order, and he sees himself.
But now something differs from morality. There the two sides faced each other as strangers. Here each side carries the whole within it. The order does not exist without the people. And the people do not exist without the order.
Summary: In ethical life, we can tell the order and the individual apart. But each side carries the whole within it. They no longer face each other as strangers.
