§ 188: Three parts of civil society

Civil society has three parts. They give this section its order.

First, the system of needs. Each person works to satisfy his needs. And in doing so he depends on the labor of all the others.

Second, the administration of justice. Courts and laws protect property. In them, freedom becomes real for all.

Third, the police and the corporation. Here “police” means public care and supervision in a broad sense. It does not only mean the officers who keep order. Corporations are associations such as guilds and professional bodies. Both guard against what chance leaves over. And they look after shared interests.

Summary: Civil society has three parts. They are the system of needs, the administration of justice, and care through the police and the corporation.
