The system of labour in civil society falls, according to the nature of its particularity, into different branches. Since what is thus, in itself, alike within particularity comes into existence, as something held in common, within the association, the self-seeking purpose, directed toward its own particular [interest], at the same time grasps and actualizes itself as universal; and the member of civil society is, according to his particular skill, a member of the corporation, whose universal purpose is thereby entirely concrete, and has no wider compass than that which lies in the trade, the particular business and interest, itself.
