|181| The ethical dissolution of the family consists in this: that the children, brought up to free personality, are, upon reaching their majority, recognized as legal persons, capable, in part, of having free property of their own, and, in part, of founding families of their own — the sons as heads, the daughters as wives — a family in which they now have their substantial determination, over against which their first family recedes to the position of a mere first ground and point of departure, and, still more, the abstraction of the stock has no rights.

    § 177: The children go out into the world

    The family dissolves when the children grow up. This is its ethical dissolution. It is not a misfortune but its goal.

    What happens?

    The children come of age. They now count as legal persons in their own right. They can have property of their own. And they can found families of their own. The sons become heads of a family. The daughters become wives.

    In the new family they now have their real vocation. The family they come from steps back. It stays their point of departure. The wider clan has no rights over them at all anymore.
