246

|234| Through this dialectic of its own, civil society is driven beyond itself — at first, this determinate society — to seek, outside itself, among other peoples who are behind it in the means of which it has a surplus, or, in general, in industrial skill, consumers, and thereby the necessary means of subsistence.

    § 246: Society pushes outward

Society cannot solve poverty inside itself. It produces too many goods and has too few buyers. What does it do?

Its own situation drives it beyond itself. It looks for buyers in other countries. Among peoples who lack what it has in abundance. Or among peoples who are not yet as far along in making things. In this way, it finds outside the means it needs to live.

Summary: Society cannot solve its inner contradictions. So it pushes outward. It looks for new buyers in other countries.
