The inwardness of the principle — as the reconciliation and resolution of all opposition, still abstract and existing only in feeling, as faith, love, and hope — unfolds its content, raising it to actuality and to self-conscious rationality, into a temporal realm proceeding from the heart, from fidelity and the fellowship of free men; a realm which, in this its subjectivity, is likewise a realm of raw caprice existing for itself and of barbarism of custom — set over against a world beyond, an intellectual realm, whose content is indeed that truth of its spirit, but which, as still unthought, is shrouded in the barbarism of representation, and which, as a spiritual power over the actual heart, comports itself toward that heart as an unfree, terrible force.

    § 359: Two realms in conflict

    At first the new principle lives only inside. As faith, love and hope.

    How does it unfold?

    It forms a worldly realm. This realm rests on the heart, on loyalty and on the fellowship of free men. But at the same time it is a realm of raw arbitrary will and barbaric customs.

    And beside it?

    Over against it stands a spiritual realm beyond this world, the Church. It possesses the truth, but not yet in thought. It wraps the truth in raw images. As a spiritual power over hearts, it becomes an unfree, terrible force.

    Summary: At first the new principle forms a worldly realm of loyalty, but also of arbitrary will. Over against it stands the Church, a power beyond this world, unfree and terrible.
