System of Ethical Life

[p. 295]

|295| the inner immediately comes forth in its determinacy, and the individual, intelligence, the absolute concept, presents itself in it immediately as purely singular and fixed; or it is the corporeality of absolute singularity, through which all indeterminacy is articulated and fixed, and, precisely through this corporeality, immediately absolute recognising. The ringing of metal, the rushing of water, and the roaring of the wind is nothing that transforms itself into its opposite out of the inner, out of absolute subjectivity; rather, they arise through movement from outside. The voice of the animal comes from its punctuality, or its being-concept; but, like the whole of it, it belongs to feeling; most animals cry out in mortal danger; it is absolutely only a going-out of subjectivity, something formal, whose highest articulation, in the song of birds, does not come from intelligence, not from the preceding transformation of nature into something subjective; the absolute solitude in which nature is within intelligence is lacking to the animal; it has not taken nature back into itself, and does not give birth to its voice out of the totality which is in this solitude; rather, the voice is something empty, totalityless, formal. The corporeality of speech, however, presents totality resumed into individuality; the absolute breaking-in into the absolute point of the individual, whose ideality is driven apart internally into a system. – It is the highest blossom of the first potency, but in this potency not considered according to its content, but formally, as the abstraction of the highest rationality and shape of singularity; but as this pure speech it does not go beyond singularity.

The negative of this potency is want, natural death, the force and devastation of nature, also of human beings against one another, or relation to organic nature; but a natural relation.
