|210| towards one another as self, only the one is knowing, within itself, and the other knowing as activity outwardly; – and the one is outwardly the universal, the rounded substance, – the other inwardly. They are therefore only opposed characters, not knowing themselves, but knowing themselves on one side in the other, and on one side only themselves within themselves; the movement of knowing is therefore in the interior itself, not in the objective; in their first relationship the sides of the tension already fall apart; they do indeed approach one another with uncertainty and shyness, but yet with trust, for each knows itself immediately in the other, and the movement is only the inversion whereby each experiences that the other likewise knows itself in its other. This reversal lies in this, that precisely each gives up its self-standingness; the stimulus is itself an excitation, i.e. it is not being satisfied within itself, but having its essence in the other – through knowing itself in the other, it sublates itself as being for itself, as different. This sublating of its own is its being for other, into which its immediate being turns round. Its own sublating comes to be for each in the other as being for other. The other is thus for me, i.e. it knows itself in me. It is only being for other, i.e. it is outside itself.

This cognition is love. It is the movement of the syllogism, such that each extreme, filled by the I, is thus immediately in the other, and only this being in the other separates itself from the I and becomes object to it. – It is the element of ethical life, not yet it itself, it is only the presentiment of it. Each only as determinate will, character or natural individual, its uncultivated natural self is recognised. – High⁵⁴⁾ chivalrous love falls within mystical
