|254| knows itself as the absolute power, which is just as much wealth as [it] sacrifices the universal one, just as much protects right as equity and settlement, just as much protects life and punishes in life, as it forgives evil and grants forfeited life – Thus this spirit is the absolute might everywhere, which lives in itself, and now [must] give itself the intuition of itself as this, or makes itself its purpose. As power it is only the singular that is the purpose – or the abstract of the singular; but its self-preservation is the organisation of its life, the spirit of a people which intends itself. – Its concept, universality in the complete freedom and independence of the singulars –
Spirit is the nature of the individuals, their immediate substance, and its movement and necessity; it is just as much their personal consciousness in existence as their pure consciousness, their life, their actuality. They know the universal will α) as their particular one, and in such a way that it is their externalized particular one, and likewise know it as their objective essence, their pure might, which is in itself their essence; as in their knowing. In the movement of the powers three things are to be distinguished α) these themselves, as having come to be through externalization β) as knowing of the singulars, and γ [as] universal knowing. α) The coming-to-be of the powers is externalization; but not of necessity, rather the power of the universal is known as essence;128) for the sake of this knowing each externalizes himself;129) not as towards a lord, but towards it
