The military estate and war are α) the actual sacrifice of the self, – the danger of death for the singular one; the intuiting of his abstract immediate negativity, just as he is likewise his immediately positive self; crime is a necessary moment in the concept of right and of law that holds force; – that each, as this singular one, makes himself into absolute power – beholds himself as absolutely free, – for himself and really against an other as the universal negativity; – in war it is granted to him – it is crime for the universal; the purpose the preservation of the whole – against the enemy who goes about destroying it – This externalization must have precisely this abstract form, be individuality-less, death be received and given coldly, not through the stationary battle where the singular one fixes his opponent in the eye and kills him in immediate hatred – but death is given and received emptily.174)
