|274| science in general – Spirit here has some object or other which it treats without relation to desire and need – it is intelligence¹⁶⁹⁾ that knows itself – the object is the concept of some determinate thing or other – ascending from its sensuous constitution to its essence. – But it is an object appearing alien; a doing which treats the thought as such – externalizes itself as intelligence, not as absolute actual self;¹⁷⁰⁾ – the concept does not become object to itself. He raises his thinking into universality, effaces its arbitrariness, what is in itself and necessary.

This missing moment is supplied in the military estate, – or the whole is individuality. – Its busyness for the existing whole,¹⁷¹⁾ its thinking of it, goes back into the self – the whole is individual, people, turned against others; the restoration of the indifferent standing of individuals towards one another, state of nature; only here is it real. – The relation is partly quiet subsistence of the individuals independently of one another, sovereignty; – partly connection through treaties; but the treaties do not have the actuality of the actual contract; not an existing power over them, but the individual people is precisely the universal as existing power – They must therefore
