The estates; or the nature of spirit articulating itself within itself
Cross-reference: The estates of the Groundlines: § 201–§ 207.
Spirit157) knowing itself as all actuality and essentiality intuits itself, is object to itself, or it is to itself an existing organism.158) It forms its consciousness – it is only as yet true spirit; in itself; in each estate it has a determinate labour, knowing of its existence and doing in it, – and a particular concept, knowing of essentiality. The two have partly to separate, partly to unite; – trust is the first, its diremption into the abstraction of right is the second; – absolute mistrust is the third; (or the absolute counting of the thing – of money – of the representative, of the universal) – With this the object [enters], which is in itself the universal one, the state is purpose – knowing of duty; morality – but this universal in its particular branches, estate of business. – Then the universal as universal, the scholar, – finally the military estate – the negated actual singular, danger of death – to the scholar the vanity of his self is the most important thing. – Absolute individuality of the people.
157) In the margin: I. the lower estates, or those which have their object and their consciousness in the particular.
158) In the margin: Consciousness is its stuff, out of which it makes its existence for itself
