|190| object is born out of the I as something that is. – This is the first creative power which spirit exercises; Adam gave all things a name, this is the sovereign right and first taking possession of the whole of nature, or the creating of it out of spirit; λογος reason essence of the thing and speech, matter and saying, category. Man speaks to the thing as his own,13) and this is the being of the object. Spirit relates itself to itself; – it says to the ass, you are an inner and this inner is I – and your being is a sound which I have arbitrarily invented – ass is a sound which is something quite other than sensuous being itself; insofar as we see it, also feel or hear it, we are it ourselves, immediately one with it, filled; but stepping back as name, it is something spiritual – something quite other.

The world, nature, is no longer a realm of images, inwardly sublated, which have no being, but a realm of names. – That realm of images is dreaming spirit, which has to do with a content which [has] no reality, no existence – its awakening is the realm of names; here is at the same time the separation, it is as consciousness; now for the first time its images have truth; – the dreamer, indeed, also supposes this, but it is not true – the dreamer cannot distinguish himself from the one awake; but the waking distinguishes itself from the dreaming, in that what is for it is true – it is true – no longer is merely its being-for-itself present – the object images; but the enclosed being-for-itself has at the same time the form of being; it is.
