[p. 207]

|207| of themselves47) – rational conduct of nature’s laws in their external existence. To nature itself nothing happens – singular purposes of natural being [become] a universal. Bird flies off –

47) In the margin: singular hen, its rational existence is that it is fed and eaten – wind, mighty stream, mighty ocean, subdued, ploughed. No compliments to be made to it – wretched sentimentality, which holds to singulars.

Here the drive steps back entirely out of labour; it lets nature wear itself away, looks on calmly, and governs the whole with only slight effort – cunning.48) Honour of cunning against power, to take hold of blind power at one side so that it turns against itself – to comprehend it, to grasp it as determinacy, to be active against this – or to make it, as movement, go back precisely into itself, to sublate itself – man is thus the fate of the singular. Through cunning the will has become feminine.49) The drive that goes outward is, as cunning, theoretical looking on; the unknowing driving into knowing; two powers, characters.

48) In the margin: the broad side of the side of force is attacked by the point of cunning.

49) In the margin: cunning something other than slyness; – the most open action is the greatest cunning, – (we must take it in its truth) – namely, through his openness he brings the other to light, so that it shows itself in and for itself, precisely therein annihilates itself. – The great bearing, to compel the others to be as they are in and for themselves; into the light of consciousness; even if they are in the right, they do not know how to defend it through speech – muteness the bad, base cunning; master from the ground up, so that the other in its doing perverts itself

This looking on, how that which is sublates itself in itself, is different from the drive, the I that has stepped back out of it into itself, and the I knowing the nullity of this being, whereas [the drive] is that which is tensed in them.
