[p. 287]
|287| of itself – It is its resting work of art – the existing universe, and world history. – Philosophy externalizes itself – arrives at its beginning, immediate consciousness – which is precisely the dirempted – It is thus man in general – and as the point of man is – so is the world – and as it is, so is he – One stroke creates them both – What was before this time – the other of time – not another time, but eternity, the thought of time – in this the question is sublated; for it means another time; – but thus eternity itself is in time; it is a before of time – thus itself past – it has been; absolutely been, it is not – Time is the pure concept – the intuited empty self in its movement, as space in its rest – Before filled time is, time is not at all – Its filling is the actual returned into itself out of empty time – its intuiting of itself is time – the non-objective – But if we say before the world – time without filling – the thought of time, precisely the thinking, that reflected into itself. – It is necessary to go out beyond this time, every period – but into the thought of time; – the former [is the] bad infinity, which never reaches that – whither it goes.
This diremption is the eternal creating, i.e. the creating of the concept of spirit – this substance of the concept which bears itself and its opposite. – The universe, thus immediately free of spirit – but must return to it – or rather the doing is its, this movement – it has to establish the unity for itself – likewise in the form of immediacy, it is world history.196) In it this is sublated, that nature and spirit are one essence only in themselves – spirit comes to knowing of it.
196) In the margin: man does not become master over nature until he has become so over himself – It is becoming spirit in itself; – that this in-itself may exist, spirit must comprehend itself –
