γ)38) (this syllogism, rounded within itself, is at the same time turned outwards, or it is consciousness proper, which however is considered here as enclosed in the I.) – Namely, the will is being-for-itself, which has extirpated within itself all alien content that is; thereby, however, it is the otherless, the contentless,39) and feels this lack; but it is a lack which is likewise positive; (it is the purpose; the form, that it is only purpose, is the lacking being. Being as such has precisely become form.) The negative, excluding, is in the will itself in such a way that in it it is directed only upon itself; it is that which is excluded from itself; – the purpose stands over against the self; singularity, actuality over against the universal; the feeling of lack is the α) unity of both posited above in the drive, as feeling; as lack of the opposition. The syllogism is only the first, the universal is concluded together with singularity through the drive; the extremes have the form of indifferent being for one another. Positing of the first reality, which is imperfect.

38) In the margin: α) positing of the syllogism into its extremes, so that they are mediated through another relationship. singularity opposed to the purpose

39) In the margin: lack because the syllogism is the immediately first, hence indifference of the extremes.

b)40) The satisfaction of the drive is the second syllogism. α) the satisfaction is [that] of the drive, not of desire; the latter is animal, i.e. the object has the abstract form of being proper, of externality; and only thus is it for the self; the union is therefore the equally pure vanishing. But here being is only form, or what the I is, as a whole, is the drive; this
