I) The lower estates and dispositions

Cross-reference: Peasant estate § 203, estate of trade and industry § 204.

a) the estate of immediate trust and of crude concrete labour, the peasant estate. – Absolute trust is the ground and the element of the state; – but in the cultivated state it withdraws into an estate – into the elementary point of departure – and universal element which remains in all – but which takes on its more conscious form. – The peasant estate is thus this individuality-less trust, which has its individuality in the unconscious individual, in the earth.159) As labouring it is not the labourer of the abstract form, but provides, roughly speaking, for the most, the whole of its needs; likewise its work is connected with its doing only inwardly – the connection of its purpose and of the actualization is the unconscious, nature – he ploughs, sows, but it is God who gives the increase – the seasons, and the trust that what he has laid in the soil will come about of itself – the activity is the subterranean one – taxes and levies he pays because it just is so – these fields, houses have been so charged from all time – it is so, nothing further – old rights – and if something new is imposed on him, he does not understand why, but regards it as an individual lordship, that the noble lords need a great deal, – that in general the state surely needs it – but immediately he does not see this, but [only that] money is just being drawn from him, the men of business must live too, and the noble lord, the prince, is just the noble lord, the prince – So he also lets right be laid on him more like a command, and demands only, not that he understand the matter, but only that he be spoken with, that he be told what he [should] do, and [for what he] is commanded, – a rough stimulus, so that he notices there is a power present here, must be added in

159) In the margin: it is only the possibility that labours
