|205| c) Determination of the object; it is thus content, distinction, and indeed of the syllogism; singularity and universality, and a middle of the same. But α) being, immediate, its middle is dead universality, thinghood, otherness; and β) its extremes are particularity, determinacy, and individuality – Insofar as it is the other, its activity is that of the I; it has none of its own; this extreme falls outside it; as thinghood it is passivity, communication of this activity, has it as fluid, but as alien in it. – Its other extreme is the opposition – (particularity) of this its being and of activity; it is passive, it [is] for other, touches the same,43) is (acid) in general something to be worn away, communication of the other, this is its being, but at the same time active shape against it. Reversed relationship, on one side the activity is only something communicated, and it the communication, the purely receptive, on the other it is active against other.

43) In the margin: play* of this activity, transformation of its passivity into activity – thinghood is its centre, simple universality, force its other, only communicated outside it, for it is pure object, has it as something alien in it. – Tool; * Alongside: pride of peoples in their tool Man makes tools for this reason, because he is rational, and this is the first expression of his will, this will still the abstract will –

(The satisfied drive is the sublated labour of the I, this is this object, which labours in its stead. Labour is the this-worldly making-oneself into a thing, the sundering of the I that is drive is precisely this making-oneself into an object – (desire must always begin from the beginning, it does not get as far as separating labour from itself) but the drive is unity of the I as made into a thing.)

Mere activity is pure mediation, movement; – the mere satisfaction of desire is pure annihilation of the object.

Labour44) itself as such is not only activity (acid); but

44) In the margin: not cause, the same is the effect
