|264| freedom of the individuals in their immediate existence is lost; but their inner one – the freedom of thought preserved – spirit is purified of immediate existence, it has stepped into its pure element of knowing, and is indifferent to existing singularity; it begins here to be as knowing; or it is its formal existence as [that of] knowing itself; – it is this Nordic essence which is within itself but has its existence in the self of all.
According to this principle there is α) the multiplicity of individuals, the mass of the people, over against their one individual, the monarch – those are the multiplicity, movement, fluidity; – this one is the immediate, the natural – this alone is the natural, i.e. hither nature has fled; – it is the last remnant of it, as positive – the family of the prince is the only positive one – the others are to be left153) – the other individual counts only as externalized, cultivated, as that which it has made itself into, – the whole, the commonwealth, is as little bound to the one as to the other – it is the self-supporting indestructible body, – the prince may be constituted as he will, the citizens as they will, – the commonwealth is closed within itself and self-preserving.154) β) just as
