[p. 284]

|284| – the existing actual spirit, become object to itself as spirit – but as representation and faith – It is the spirit of the congregation – but in its representation it flees beyond its self, far away from it – that immediate knowing and this otherness are not united – Everything190) has the form of representation, of the beyond – without concept – without necessity, – happening – chance – True, the word eternal counsel and will of God191) – but only said, not understood – not concept, not self.

190) In the margin: the in-itself is distant – the reconciliation in its being took place long ago

191) In the margin: pain, not thinking – not universal

The church has its opposite in the state, i.e. in existing spirit; it is the latter raised into thought; man lives in two worlds192) – in the one he has his actuality, which vanishes, his naturalness, his sacrifice, his transience – in the other his absolute preservation – knows himself as absolute essence – He dies away from actuality with knowledge and will, in order to acquire the eternal – the non-actual, life in thought – universal self – But this eternal has its existence in the spirit of the people – it is spirit, which is just only spirit – through this movement – still opposed in form, [is] the same in essence – The government knows this, the spirit of the people knows that it is the actual spirit which contains itself and the thought of itself. – The fanaticism of the church is – wanting to introduce the eternal, the kingdom of heaven as such on earth, i.e. in opposition to the actuality of the state – to preserve fire in water – precisely the actuality of the kingdom of heaven is the state – reconciliation in thinking of the essences of the two with one another through the church – If they are unreconciled – then state and church are imperfect. – The state is the spirit of actuality; what shows itself in it must be in conformity with it; it does not have to respect conscience, – this is the inner; whether it is valid as action or as principle of action

192) In the margin: he is assured of his reconciliation – in devotion enjoyment not present
