But the tool does not yet have activity in itself; it is an inert thing; does not [return] into itself – I must still labour with it; I have placed cunning between myself and external thinghood, – to spare myself and to cover my determinacy with it and to let it wear itself out;45) but I thereby save only as to quantity – but still get calluses; making myself into a thing is still a necessary moment; the drive’s own activity not yet in the thing. Activity of its own is also to be laid into the tool; to make it into something self-acting. This happens in such a way that α) it is so intertwined, in the line, thread, its two-sidedness is used in order, in this opposition, to make it go back into itself – in general passivity transforms itself into activity, into holding fast of the coming-together. β) in general that nature’s own activity, elasticity of the watch-spring, water, wind, is applied in order to do, in their sensuous existence, something quite other than they wanted to do – their blind doing is made into a purposive one;46) – into the opposite

45) In the margin: the I remains the soul of this syllogism, in relation to it the activity

46) In the margin: the reality, indifference of the extremes of the syllogism, which are in tension against one another; that this indifference in itself
