|216| things, not against a third – Man has the right to take into possession what he can as a singular; he has the right – this lies in his concept – to be self; thereby he is the power over all things. But his taking possession also acquires the significance of excluding a third – what, in respect of this significance, is that which binds the other? What may I take into possession without wrong to the third? Precisely such questions cannot be answered. – The seizure of possession63) is the sensuous taking of control,64) and through recognition it has to become a rightful one. It is not rightful because it is. In itself the immediate man takes possession. – It is this contradiction, that the immediate makes up the content, the subject whose predicate right is supposed to be. – Because it is recognised by the others, it is my property; but what do the others recognise? That which I have, of which I am in possession. The content therefore proceeds from my possession. Can I now have what and as much as I will? I cannot take it from a third, for the sake of recognition, for what he has is indeed recognised. – But in taking it into possession immediately, i.e. as something that belongs to no one, I exclude him in itself, and so in the taking of possession the question of recognition comes forth again; I take what could become his possession. – But it could only become his possession, whereas it actually is mine; his possibility ranks behind my actuality; he has to recognise me, who actually am. But what then do I possess? – a) my body, b) the thing that I already have in my mouth, or in my hand –65)

63) In the margin: outwards, or determination of universal being

64) In the margin: Contradiction of having and of being-for-itself – In having I am immediately existing – the former as immediate being, the latter as being for itself, immediate contradiction – my thing insofar as it is mine, not insofar as it is thing, distinction

65) In the margin: Objectivity; free separation of the mine (into possession, the free object of love;) essence thing, form mine.
