|255| in the form of his pure knowing, i.e. of himself as one externalized, or of himself as universal. The universal form is this becoming of the singular into the universal, and becoming of the universal; – but it is not a blind necessity, but one mediated through knowing; or each is his own purpose in it, i.e. the purpose is already what moves; – each singular is immediately his own cause, his interest drives him, but equally the universal is to him what is valid, the middle which joins him together with his particular and his actuality.

That I have my positive self in the common will is being-recognised as intelligence, as known by me, that it is posited through me; – that I have it negatively therein, as my might, as the universal which is the negative of me, through intuiting its necessity, or through externalization. – The universal for its part presents itself so as to be, in the latter, my necessity, in the former, to sacrifice itself, and to let me come to what is mine; herein I obtain consciousness as of my self – α) labouring in general, levies, β opining abstraction of its concretions from itself as the universal – crudeness, taking offence γ) to know oneself as pure self as sublated.

α) Externalization of his particular self – he sets the self on the side of the universal, the universal is the book, dead letter – its life, will is the self of the individuals – They are its power, they all help it, it can count on the external support of all.

β) Likewise their pure knowing belongs to it; they know it as their essence – (as their nature their custom,) – might, pure essence;

γ) their particular self, they are preserved, and goodness –
